Gerry Embleton is an Anglo-Swiss artist who works
internationally. He was Born in London, England,
which remained the hub of his working life until
he moved to Switzerland. He became a freelance illustrator
upon leaving school and has worked as a freelance
ever since.
He cut his teeth on comic-strips in the high days
of English comic-strip publishing, moved into advertizing
via children's educational illustration, painting
historical subjects and, with great pleasure, fairy
tales and fantasy.
Won a name for himself as an illustrator of military
subjects specializing in highly detailed, accurate
studies of costume. His works include writing and
illustrating two photographic studies of medieval
costume, and over 40 titles for the military publisher
"Osprey".
He has produced thousands of drawings on most subjects
and for most kinds of publications, from fairly
academic studies to "cartoons". Started
to paint landscapes in the late sixties and has
had exhibitions in England, Scotland, Canada, the
USA and Switzerland, etc.
Moved to Switzerland in 1983 to research 15th century
Swiss costume, arms and armour. He was invited to
work for the Swiss Institute of Arms and Armour
at Grandson Castle and became their official artist
and later Head of their Creative Art Department.
Formed his own company, TMAG
(Time Machine AG) in 1988 making life sized
historical figures for exhibitions and museums.
TMAG's first job, as part of the refurbishment of
Lenzburg Castle, won a European Prize.
Since its foundation
TMAG has completed more than 60 commissions
in 8 countries and won a worldwide reputation for
the high quality of its work. In 1986 a passion
for experimental archaeology led him to form "The
Companie of Saynte George" - an international
group recreating daily life in the late 15th century,
and subsequently invitations to participate in Switzerland's
700th anniversary celebrations in 1991 and the role
of art director of the enormously successful celebration
of the 600th anniversary of Berne, the Swiss capital.
"It is a great pleasure to be able to bring
alive the past and to see real interest kindle in
the eyes of children. History is frequently taught
as the most boring subject in the school curriculum
yet it contains everything we were, are and will
be..."
Gerry now divides his time between illustrating,
designing and making museum exhibitions with "Time
Machine AG", painting historical and modern
subjects, writing and research.
He acts as an historical consultant for exhibitions,
museum displays and occasionally films, including
"...a really minute contribution to Peter Jackson's
trilogy "Lord of the Rings".
He lives and works with his artist wife Anne and
their family in the Bernese Jura "a perfect
place, within twenty minutes of a mountain top and
less than two hours from three international airports."
He has work in two traveling exhibitions in the
USA, has several hundred works on permanent display
and is regularly engaged in new museum projects.
He is currently working on three books on 18th century
North America, a life long interest - and, a fantasy
book on Wizards.
"I'm eternally grateful to my parents for passing
down a more than normal ration of energy. i know
that i am extremely lucky to be able to feel enthusiastic
about all the work that I do..."
